Crypte (cad. AB 153): entry by order of 27 December 1974

Origin and history

The church of Saint-Martin de Mesnil-Clinchamps, located in the village of the same name in Normandy, is a Catholic building built in the 12th and 13th centuries. It illustrates the medieval religious architecture of the region, marked by the use of granite, a material typical of the local buildings of that time. Its location in the Calvados department, near the border between Lower Normandy and Upper Normandy, reflects the importance of rural parishes in the territorial and spiritual organization of the Middle Ages.

Between 1640 and 1680, the church underwent major changes that transformed its original appearance. Lateral chapels, a new bell tower and a sacristy are added, reflecting the liturgical and aesthetic evolutions of the Counter-Reform. These modifications incorporate baroque elements, as evidenced by some elements of the preserved furniture, while partially preserving the original Romanesque structure.

The Second World War marked the building deeply: the bombings of the Battle of Normandy in 1944 destroyed its stained glass windows. A contemporary stained glass window specifically commemorates the air raid of 10 June 1944, recalling the tragic role played by the region during the Disembarkation. These events left visible traces in the local heritage, mixing historical memory and reconstruction.

The crypt of the church, the oldest and best preserved part, has been classified as Historic Monuments since December 27, 1974. This ranking underscores its archaeological and architectural value, offering a rare testimony of medieval construction techniques in Normandy. The rest of the building, although not protected in the same title, retains remarkable furniture listed in the Supplementary Inventory of Historic Monuments.

The interior furniture, mostly dating from the 18th century, includes emblematic pieces such as an oak chair, stalls, a altarpiece and a lutrin. These elements illustrate post-medieval religious art and local patronage, often linked to the noble or bourgeois families of the region. Their presence reinforces the heritage character of the church, between medieval heritage and beautifications of modern times.

Today, the Church of Saint Martin remains an active place of worship and a point of historical interest for the municipality of Mesnil-Clinchamps, now integrated with Noues de Siena. Its official address, 17 Rue Louis de Gouvets, and its Insee code (14658) anchor it in the territory of Calvados, between Caen and the borders of the Norman Bocage.
