Origin and history
The Saint-Martin de Pendé church, located in the Somme department near Abbeville, was built in the sixteenth century. It is distinguished by its architecture in stone covered with slate, with a bell tower marking its entrance. Inside, carved wooden vaults and ornamental blocks, including a pipasso player (picardian cornemuseum), testify to a period craftsmanship. The Renaissance-style baptismal fonts, carved stone, come from the Abbey of Saint-Valery-sur-Somme, adding a historical and artistic dimension to the monument.
The building was partially protected in respect of historical monuments: its structure and the sidewalls were inscribed by order of 15 June 1926. This recognition highlights the heritage importance of the church, particularly for its interior architectural elements. The property belongs to the commune of Pendé, and the church remains an emblematic place of local religious and cultural heritage.
The location of the church at 1 Church Street in Pendé is specified with good accuracy (level 8 of 10 depending on the sources). The monument is part of the landscape of the churches of the Somme, studied in particular in the book Churches of the Somme of Philippe Seydoux (1973). Its history and architectural characteristics make it a point of interest for the study of Christian architecture in Picardia and of French historical monuments.
