Origin and history

Saint-Martin de Saint-Martin-de-la-Place church, located in the Maine-et-Loire department of Pays de la Loire, finds its origins in the seventeenth century. Originally, a chapel dedicated to Saint-Étienne, built in the 16th century on the north bank of the Loire, served as a retreat for religious offices when the early parish church, located in the river bed, was inaccessible due to the floods. This chapel became the parish church in 1626 after the final ruin of the original building, then called Saint-Martin.

The transformation of the chapel into a parish church was accompanied by several major developments. In 1627 baptismal fonts were installed there, and in 1631 a bell tower was erected. The northern chapel, dedicated to Notre-Dame des Anges, was built in 1665 thanks to the financing of the parish priest Innocent Soldubois, although it was converted into a sacristy in the 1720s. These modifications reflect the adaptation of the building to the liturgical and community needs of the time.

Over the centuries, the church has been enlarged to respond to population growth. In the late 18th or early 19th century, the nave was enlarged and extended westward. In 1820 a semi-circular apse choir replaced the original flat bedside, according to the plans of the expert Michel Antoine Charles Prieur-Duperray. This work, carried out by entrepreneurs Pierre Callouard and Nicolas Rousseau, illustrates the architectural and functional evolution of the building.

The church of Saint Martin has been classified as a historical monument since 1957, with specific protection for its bell tower. Its history is closely linked to the river dynamics of the Loire and the spiritual needs of the local community, from its role as a retreat chapel to its present status as an emblematic parish church of the Angelvin heritage.
