Origin and history

The Saint-Martin church of Tollevast, located in the Manche department in Normandy, is a Catholic building built mainly in the second quarter of the 12th century. It illustrates the Norman Romanesque style, with proto-Gothic influences, especially in its vaulted choir of warheads. This monument is characterized by an exceptional sculpted decoration, including various modillons, historic capitals and caps that already announce Gothic innovations. The building has undergone later modifications, such as the reconstruction of the south wall in 1757 and the reshaping of the bell tower in the 15th century, but retains architectural elements typical of its time, such as Romanesque windows and a gate adorned with yousures in the middle.

The history of the church is linked to the seigneury of Tollevast, mentioned in 1066 when Henri de Tollevast participated in the Norman conquest of England alongside William the Conqueror. As a reward for his participation in the Battle of Hastings, he received land in England. Later, in 1219, the bishop of Coutances, Hugues de Morville, confirmed a charter by which Thomas de Tollevast ceded the patronage of the church to the Abbey of the Vœu de Cherbourg. In 1350, another Thomas of Tollevast gave two thirds of the tithe of the church to the same abbey, the remaining third being attributed to the priory of the Luthumière. These acts illustrate the close links between the local seigneury, religious institutions and the financing of the building.

Classified as historical monuments since 1956, St.Martin's church in Tollevast also houses remarkable furniture, including two 15th century alabasters representing a Saint Christophe and an education of the Virgin. Its basilical plan, with a unique nave of 18 meters long, a vaulted choir and a bedside in the hemicycle, makes it a representative example of the small Romanesque churches of Cotentin. The sculptures, especially the historical modillons and capitals, bear witness to a particularly expressive Norman Romanesque art, where geometric motifs, real or fantastic animals, and symbolic scenes combine.

Architecturally, the church presents a mix of styles, with primitive Romanesque elements such as the small windows of the north facade, and posterior additions, such as the revamped bell tower in the 15th century. Inside, the arches supporting the bell tower, the vault of the choir and the apse arcade attract particular attention. The capos at the fall of the warheads, typical of the transition to gothic, as well as the capitals decorated with monkeys and animals confronted, reinforce his artistic interest. These characteristics place the church in the regional group of small churches of the Cotentin, influenced by the school of Lessay and perhaps by the Abbey of the Vœu from their origin.
