Origin and history
Saint-Mathurin de Saint-Mathurin-sur-Loire, in the department of Maine-et-Loire in Pays de la Loire, is a religious building built in the 2nd quarter of the 19th century. It is distinguished by its unusual orientation towards the Loire, unlike the tradition of east-facing churches. Built in white tuft, it has a sober facade, adorned only with a carved frieze and canned columns, topped by a dome and lantern bell tower. Its stripped neoclassical architecture, designed by architect Jacques Louis François Villers, includes a peristyle, a narthex, three naves without transept, and a circular choir. Inside, paintings exhibited at the Paris Salon in 1841 decorate the walls, while a contemporary work, La Porte de la Paix by Grau Garriga (2012), adorns the narthex.
The construction of the church is part of the architectural and religious renewal of the 19th century. A contest launched in 1838 was won by François Villers, marking the beginning of the work in 1840. These were completed in 1846, followed by the consecration of the building in 1847. Classified as a historical monument in 1991, the church was restored in 1992. Its history reflects the evolution of the architectural and liturgical practices of the time, mixing classical heritage and innovations, such as the absence of transept or the integration of modern works of art.
The Church of Saint Mathurin also illustrates the central role of religious buildings in 19th-century rural communities. On the edge of the Loire River, it served as a place of worship, but also as a visual and social landmark for the local population, mainly oriented towards agriculture, shipbuilding and river activities. The churches of this period, often rebuilt or renovated, symbolized both community stability and adaptation to new artistic and technical trends. Their preservation, as here with the inscription of historical monuments, bears witness to their heritage and memorial value for the succeeding generations.
