Origin and history

The church Saint-Maurice de Coclois, located in the Aube department in the Grand Est region, dates from the 16th century. It is distinguished by its rectangular architectural plan, with a three-span nave and a narrower sanctuary. The building preserves traces of its aristocratic past, including a funerary slab dedicated to Pierre de Marolle, hotel master of François de Luxembourg, lord of Frampas, who died in 1592, as well as the tombs of his family, including that of his daughter Guillemette de Marolles and her husband Gabriel des Réaulx, who was erected in 1635.

The church furniture includes merovingian sarcophagi, octagonal baptismal fonts in limestone, and glass windows dating from the 16th century. These elements illustrate the historic and artistic richness of the site, mixing medieval and Renaissance influences. The church was initially a branch of the parish of Nogent-sur-Aube, reporting to the dean of Brienne, which underlines its anchoring in the local religious network of the time.

Ranked a historic monument in 1926, Saint-Maurice Church is now owned by the municipality of Coclois. Its inscription bears witness to its heritage importance, both for its architecture and for the funeral and artistic remains it houses. The precise location at 2 Bis Rue de l'Église allows visitors to discover this place full of history, marked by centuries of religious and seigneurial life.
