Origin and history
The church Saint-Maurice de Huismes, located in the Indre-et-Loire department in the Centre-Val de Loire region, is a religious building built in the 12th century. Its architecture combines medieval elements, including a 13th century bell tower and a partially restored nave in the 19th century. A notable feature is the covered 16th century gallery, which connects the west facade of the church to a former seigneurial house, called the Deanne, by crossing the street.
The church has undergone several changes over the centuries. In the 19th century, its nave was restored and enlarged from a north side at the beginning of the 20th century. The bell tower, square in shape and flanked by a stair turret, is surmounted by a belfry with geminied bays in third point. The span of the choir, vaulted on cross of warheads, rests on third-point arcades decorated with carved capitals representing foliage, characters or fantastic animals.
In terms of heritage, Saint-Maurice Church was partially classified as historic monuments in 1913 for its apse and adjoining span. The bell tower and the covered passage linking the church to the Deannaeus were inscribed in 1940, before the entire building, including the sacristies and the garden of the former presbytery, was registered in 2019. These successive protections testify to the historical and architectural value of this monument, combining medieval heritage and more recent additions.
The location of the church, on the Place de la Mairie d'Huismes, as well as its integration into the urban fabric via the covered gallery, illustrate its central role in community life since the Middle Ages. The building, which is both communal and private, continues to mark the architectural and religious landscape of this town.
