Origin and history

The church of Saint-Maurice de Vauxrezis, located in the department of Aisne in the Hauts-de-France region, is a religious building dating back to the 1st quarter of the 12th century. It features a marked Romanesque style, especially visible in its large double-roll arcades and its windows in the middle of the hanger. The western gate, typical of this period, is preceded by a porch rebuilt in the sixteenth century, illustrating the first major transformations of the building.

The 1918 bombings severely damaged the parts classified since 1913 (clocher, choir, apse and transept), requiring identical reconstruction in the 2nd quarter of the 20th century. Today, only the central nave vessel, the northern side of the collateral, the western façade with its porch, and the north cruise remain from the original church. The nave, however, retains its Romanesque elements, while the western facade has a bay in the middle of the hanger surmounted by a prefixed cross.

The church was fully ranked in 2013, recognizing its heritage value. Among the artisans who contributed to its history were masters masons from the 16th and 18th centuries, as well as architects and glassmakers from the 20th century, such as Lucien Sallez (architect) and Paul Louzier (painting glass). Owned by the commune, it bears witness to the architectural changes and historical vicissitudes of the region, especially during the First World War.

Available sources, including Wikipedia, Monumentum and the Merimée base, highlight its importance in the religious heritage of Aisne. Its precise address, 4 Place de l'Église in Vauxrezis, and its Insee code (02767) place it in the heart of a territory marked by Picardy history. The accuracy of its geographical location is considered satisfactory (level 7/10), facilitating its identification in the local landscape.

The Saint-Maurice church embodies both a medieval heritage and successive adaptations related to conflicts and liturgical needs. Its 12th century portal, Renaissance porch and modern reconstructions make it a representative example of the historical stratification of religious buildings in France. The protected elements, referred to under cadastral reference D 157, cover the entire building, guaranteeing its preservation for future generations.
