Origin and history

The church of Saint-Médard de Verteuil-sur-Charente, built in the 12th century, initially depended on the ancient diocese of Poitiers and was attached to the abbey of Nanteuil. This monument, marked by the Wars of Religion, has undergone major transformations, including the replacement of its stone vault with a wooden vault after a collapse. Its architecture, of basilical plane, ends with a cul-de-four apse flanked by two apsidioles, reflecting the Romanesque characteristics of the era.

In the 19th century, the church bell tower was completely rebuilt in 1878, marking a period of significant restoration. The building, inscribed in the Historical Monuments by order of 18 December 1969, is now owned by the commune of Verteuil-sur-Charente. Its exact address, 3 Rue du Prieuré, and its Insee code (16400) confirm its anchoring in the Charente department, in New Aquitaine.

The location of the church is considered satisfactory (level 7/10), and its present state, although marked by the vicissitudes of history, makes it a major architectural and historical testimony of the region. Available sources, including Monumentum, highlight its heritage importance, while noting its potential openness to the public, without specifying the exact modalities of the visit.
