Origin and history
Saint-Michel d'Ordiarp Church is a Catholic church located in the village of Ordiarp, in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques department, in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region. Built in the early twelfth century, it is representative of the medieval religious architecture of the region. His choir and his apses date from this period, while the nave underwent subsequent modifications, including an extension of the vaults in the mid-12th century.
The building was formerly attached to a house of refuge, dependent on the priory of Roncevaux, which served as a stage for pilgrims travelling to Santiago de Compostela. This reception and rest function for spiritual travellers marks its historical importance in the network of pilgrimage paths. The facade and part of the nave were rebuilt in a more recent era, replacing the original masonries.
Classified as historical monuments by order of 3 June 1922, Saint-Michel Church is now owned by the commune of Ordiarp. Its classification reflects its heritage value, both for its architecture and for its role in the religious and cultural history of the Basque Country and the Aquitaine region.
