Origin and history
Saint-Michel de Blaise Church is a Catholic church located in the delegated municipality of Blaise, Colombey-les-Deux-Églises, Haute-Marne. Mentioned from the 12th century as a cure dependent on the Abbey of Montier-en-Der, it bears witness to an ancient religious occupation in this region of Champagne. Its choir and transept, rebuilt in the late 15th or early 16th century, illustrate the architectural evolutions of the late Gothic era.
The nave and exterior façade of the church were entirely rebuilt in 1784, marking a major renovation phase under the Old Regime. The construction of the tower, originally planned in 1784, was finally completed only in 1834-1835, reflecting the technical and financial constraints of the time. These successive transformations show the continuous adaptation of the building to the liturgical and aesthetic needs of local communities.
The choir and transept of Saint-Michel Church have been listed as historic monuments since December 23, 1925, recognizing their heritage value. This official protection underscores the historical and architectural importance of these elements, characteristic of the religious buildings of the Haute-Marne. The church remains today a material witness to the religious and social history of the region, from the Middle Ages to the modern period.
