Origin and history
The church of St.Michel de Cabrenys, also called Cabrens or Cabrenç, is an ancient Romanesque church whose remains remain on the site of the castle of Cabrenç. These ruins are located at the border of the municipalities of Serralongue and Lamanère, in the department of the Pyrénées-Orientales. The building illustrates medieval religious architecture typical of the region, marked by Romanesque style.
The monument is mentioned in specialized works such as the forgotten Romanesque Churches of Roussillon (Géraldine Mallet, 2003) and Catalunya romànica (1996), which highlight its heritage importance in the historical context of Vallespir and Capcir. Its location, near a castle, suggests a link to a seigneurial or defensive occupation, common for Romanesque mountain churches.
No specific dates of construction or abandonment are mentioned in available sources. However, the ruins testify to an ancient occupation, probably linked to the religious and community life of the surrounding villages. The site, now partly abandoned, remains a material testimony of local medieval history.
