Origin and history

The church of Saint-Michel de Mouzieys-Panens is mentioned for the first time in 1125 in an inventory of the cathedral of Albi, although the present building dates mainly from the 4th quarter of the 15th century and 1st quarter of the 16th century. Originally located outside the city walls, it consists of a nave of three spans extended by a polygonal bedside. Its architecture reflects regional influences, especially through its flamboyant filling windows, typical of the 15th and 16th centuries.

The entrance door, located to the south, is framed by fine mouldings separated by a gorge, while the bases of the columns retain traces of twists, a decorative pattern taken from one of the pillars of the nave. Inside, the vaults, partially restored, contrast with those of the chapels, considered to be of the time. A shallow north side chapel opens onto the nave with a broken arch decorated with carved capitals. These details illustrate the transition from late Gothic to early Renaissance.

Classified as a Historical Monument by decree of 23 April 1979, the church now belongs to the commune of Mouzieys-Panens. Its modern porch, added later, precedes the original entrance, while its state of conservation varies according to the parts: the location is estimated "passible" (note 5/10), perhaps reflecting challenges related to its preservation. Protected elements include the entire building, referenced under cadastre A 542.
