Origin and history

The church of Saint-Michel de Nantua, located in the Ain department, is the last vestige of the Benedictine abbey Saint-Pierre founded around 671. Transformed into a priory in 1100, it preserves a Romanesque architecture of clunisian influence, enriched with regional Gothic elements at the end of the 12th century. The building includes a painting by Eugene Delacroix, Saint Sebastian rescued by the holy women (1836), and was classified as a historic monument in 1907, with the exception of its bell tower, registered in 2015.

The current bell tower, of neo-Roman or neo-Byzantine style, replaces the original destroyed during the French Revolution on the order of prefect Antoine-Louis Albitte in 1794. Reconstructed between 1849 and 1850 under the direction of architect Xavier Meunier, he incorporated sculptures by Antoine Regembal, MP for Ain and political opponent. Its complex staircase, housed in an octagonal tower, rises above the cross of the transept, preserving the traces of the old plane engraved in the slabs of the nave.

The church illustrates the architectural and political transformations of the region, marked by the systematic demolition of the bell towers during the Revolution and their reconstruction in the 19th century. The exterior sculpted motifs, inspired by Byzantine decorations, contrast with the original Clunisian novel, while the curved abat-sons and bays highlight the adaptation of medieval techniques to modern needs. The archives also mention the role of entrepreneur Charles-Louis Vavre, active in the restoration of local churches.

The protection of the monument reflects its heritage importance: classified as early as 1907 for its nave and choir, the church saw its bell tower inscribed later, in 2015, thus recognizing the efforts of reconstruction of the nineteenth century. The slabs of the nave, engraved with plans and sketches of decorations, testify to the methods of work of the craftsmen and the artistic continuity between the epochs. Today it is a communal property and remains a place of worship and memory, open to the public.
