Origin and history

The church of Saint-Michel or Notre-Dame-de-La-Salette, located in Avermes in the department of Allier, comes from a vow made by the bishop of Moulins during the 1870 war. The latter promised to build a new church if his diocese was spared by Prussian troops. The plans were entrusted to the Reverend Father Desrosiers, and the first stone was laid in 1871. The neo-Gothic building was inaugurated in 1873, marking the realization of this pious wish.

In 1892, architect Alfred Bertrand designed a monumental staircase of 53 steps, linking the foot of the hill to the facade of the church. A statue of Notre-Dame de La Salette was installed at its end, reinforcing the devotional character of the site. The same decade saw the addition of two side chapels by architect Mitton in 1898, as well as the erection of a cross representing Saint Michael to the southeast of the building.

The church, including its exterior fittings (scaling, statue, calvary, and fences), was listed as historical monuments by order of 19 May 2003. It illustrates both 19th-century religious architecture and local history linked to Franco-Prussian conflicts, while remaining an active place of pilgrimage.

The property of the building belongs to a diocesan association, emphasizing its anchoring in the spiritual and community life of the region. Available sources, such as Monumentum and Wikipedia, confirm its heritage importance, both for its architecture and for its history linked to Marian devotion and the memory of the 1870 war.

The precise address, 5112 Place Claude Wormser in Avermes, as well as its Insee code (03013), place the monument in the urban landscape of this town of Allier. The location, noted as "a priori satisfactory" (level 7/10), makes it possible to clearly identify the site among the historical monuments of the department.

Finally, the architects involved in its construction and development — Desrosiers, Bertrand, and Mitton — left a lasting mark on this place, mixing religious function, historical commemoration, and landscape integration in the Allier Valley.
