Origin and history
Saint-Nicolas de Pommeréval is a Catholic church in the commune of Pomréval in the Seine-Maritime region of Normandy. Built in the 16th century, it replaces an earlier 13th century building. The church is built in sandstone and flint, typical materials of the area, and preserves a medieval Baptistery inherited from the old church.
In the 19th century, several restoration works were undertaken: the arrow was repaired around 1830, and other interventions took place in the 1860s and 1879s. This work aims to preserve the building, which presents a cruciform plan with a nave, an irregular transept and a triangular bedside choir. The bell tower, of pyramidal shape, dominates the cross of the transept.
The church choir houses a 16th century carved sandstone, decorated with heads, coats of arms, animals and grotesque motifs. This decoration reflects the craftsmanship and artistic influences of the time. The building is surrounded by an ancient parish enclosure adjacent to a seigneurial mansion, highlighting its importance in the local historic landscape.
Saint-Nicolas Church is listed as historical monuments by order of 26 May 2008. This protection recognizes its heritage and architectural value, while ensuring its conservation for future generations. It remains an active place of worship and a testimony to the religious and architectural history of Normandy.
Available sources, including Wikipedia and Monumentum, confirm its status as a historical monument and provide details of its construction and architectural features. The exact address of the building is 1052 Route de l'Église, 76680 Pommeréval, in the Seine-Maritime department.
