Origin and history

The Saint-Ouen church of Pont-Audemer, located on Rue de la République, is a parish building dedicated to Saint Ouen, former Archbishop of Rouen. Its construction spans centuries, mixing Romanesque, Gothic and Renaissance styles. It is the only place of worship that went through the centuries at Pont-Audemer until the 20th century, bearing witness to the religious importance of the city, shared between the dioceses of Lisieux and Rouen.

The early Romanesque church, built from the 11th century, was replaced after the Hundred Years' War by a larger building. The works, led by Michel Gohier from 1485, were interrupted in 1524 for financial reasons, leaving the nave unfinished and covered with a wooden vault. The nave, with its sides and side chapels, was raised between 1505 and 1515 by Roulland le Roux, a Rouenese architect known for his work on the cathedral of Rouen.

The building consists of a nave of seven spans, a Romanesque choir contrasting with the Gothic nave, and a transept ebauché but never finished. The triforium, a striking example of flamboyant Gothic, and the 16th century stained glass windows, complemented by those of Max Ingrand, make this church an artistic gem. The stained glass windows represent biblical scenes such as the Nativity, Crucifixion and Resurrection.

The organ, partly dating from the 16th century, was transferred from the church of the Cordeliers. Its richly carved Renaissance buffet and 18 games restored in 2000 by Michel Giroud make it a remarkable instrument. The church, classified as a historical monument in 1909, has undergone major restorations since 2015, financed by the city, the DRAC and the Departmental Council.

In 2014-2015, the Alfred Canel Museum of Pont-Audemer organized two exhibitions on the church, accompanied by a publication summarizing its history, architecture, stained glass windows and furniture. These initiatives highlighted its central role in Normandy's religious and cultural heritage.
