Origin and history

The church of Saint-Pallais de Saintes, located in Charente-Maritime, succeeds a funeral basilica built on the tomb of Palladius, bishop of the sixth century. This prelate, canonized under the name of Saint Palais, played a key role in the building of churches in Saintes, including a basilica dedicated to Saint Martin (now extinct), and contributed to the rediscovery of the tomb of Eutrope, evangelizer of the Saintonge. The present church, dependent on the Royal Abbey of the Ladies of Saints, was named by the Abbess and preserves the tomb of the mystic Mary Eustelle Harpain (1814–42), nicknamed "the Angel of the Eucharist".

The oldest parts of the building, dating from the 12th century, combine Romanesque walls with Gothic vaults added in the 13th century, such as the two dogive crosses of the nave. The choir and transept, rebuilt in the 13th century, adopt this style, while a flamboyant bay pierces the bedside in the 15th century. The bell tower, partially preserved on the north crusillon, lost its original roof, which was rebuilt in the 18th century. The facade, adorned with a four-piece portal and blind arcades, dominates a former cemetery square, transformed into a 19th century square.

The furniture includes an 18th-century polychrome wooden statue, probably representing St. The bell tower houses two bells: "Emmanuel-Marie-Xavière" (1770, 700 kg), shared with the Abbey of the Ladies, and an anonymous bell of 20 kg. The church, protected since 1931, illustrates medieval architectural evolution and its anchoring in saintly religious history.
