Origin and history
Saint-Paterne Church in Ernes is a Catholic church located in the Calvados department in Normandy. Built between the 12th and 13th centuries, it is one of the few remains of this period in the commune. Its bell tower, the only remaining element of the medieval building, was classified as Historic Monument in 1913, highlighting its heritage importance.
The church was originally attached to the former diocese of Sées. Around 1180 Froger, bishop of Sées, entrusted his patronage to the abbey of Sainte-Barbe-en-Auge. The tower, dated from the beginning of the thirteenth century, is described by historian Caumont as a remarkable vestige. Damaged during the 1944 bombings, the church was rebuilt in 1955, employing some original elements such as modillons.
Today, Saint-Paterne Church remains an emblematic place of Ernes, managed by the municipality. Although partially rebuilt, it retains traces of its medieval history, notably through its classified bell tower. Its exact address, 30 Rue Principale, allows visitors to discover this Norman heritage marked by the vicissitudes of time.
