Origin and history

Saint-Patrice de Rouen Church is a Catholic religious building located in the historic centre of Rouen, Normandy. It combines flamboyant Gothic and renaissance styles, with a major reconstruction in the 16th century on the foundations of a 13th century church. Its stained glass windows, some of which date from the 15th century, are among the most remarkable in the region, reflecting artistic evolutions between the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. The church is dedicated to Saint Patrick, patron saint of Ireland, a rare choice in France.

The construction spans centuries, marked by interruptions due to religious wars and economic crises. The first phase (1540–60) saw the construction of the choir, the lower north side and the chapel Saint-Fiacre (now chapel of the Virgin). The work resumed in 1648 with the addition of the chapel Saint Joseph and the south side. In the 19th century, the church was vaulted in stone and provided with a portal. Its stained glass windows, partly from the old church of St.Godard, illustrate local artistic exchanges.

Classified as a historical monument since 1840, the Church of St. Patrice now houses the Latin liturgy according to the rite of St. Pius V, celebrated by the Institute of Christ the King Sovereign Priest. In April 2024, it was closed to the public due to structural risks, highlighting the challenges of preserving heritage. His stained glass window of the Martyr of St. Eustache (1543), today at the Detroit Institute of Arts, bears witness to his past influence.

Historical sources, such as the work of Canon Reneault (1942) or Corpus Vitrearum (2001), document its architecture and stained glass windows. Its location, at the corner of Saint-Patrice and Abbé-Cochet streets, makes it a landmark of the Rouennais heritage, linked to the religious and political history of Normandy (Parliament of Normandy, sponsors like François de Marcillac).
