Origin and history

The church of St Peter of Vic-Fezensac finds its origins in the early Middle Ages, although most of this first construction disappeared around 1160. A new church was built from 1190, but suffered heavy damage in 1569 during the Wars of Religion, requiring partial reconstruction. These restoration works began in 1617 and ended with a consecration in 1623, marking a phase of rebirth for the monument after religious conflicts.

In the 19th century, the church was the subject of major works, notably on its structure and covering, received in 1822. A bell tower was added above the apse from 1850, under the direction of the master carpenters Bénetrix and Merlé, following the plans of architect Lodoyer. Finally, in 1936, the glass painter Raphaël Lardeur enriched the nave of a series of stained glass windows, bringing a modern artistic touch to this historical heritage.

Classified as a Historic Monument, St Peter's Church has been fully protected since 2018. Its architecture reflects the different periods of its construction, from medieval foundations to 19th century additions, while remaining a central place for the local community. The accuracy of its historical and architectural location makes it a witness to the religious and social evolutions of the region.
