Origin and history
The church of Saint-Pierre-aux-Liens d'Olizy, located in the village of Olizy-Primat (Ardennes, Grand Est), is a religious building built between the 15th and 16th centuries. It illustrates the flamboyant Gothic architecture, with a classical plan including a nave, two sides, a transept marked by an elevation of the vaults, and a bell tower overlooking the last span. Its architectural features include a turret adjacent to the southern crusillon, two portals (north and west) decorated with flamboyant reamped tympanos, and a majestic rosacea overlooking the main entrance. The gable, reinforced by foothills, is framed by two more modest lateral rosettes. Inside, the high altar and the 18th-century side altars, in coloured marble and white limestone, contrast with the sobriety of the walls. The sacristy houses a shield of the corporations of builders, testimony of the craftsmen who worked on its construction.
The painting of the high altar, The Adoration of the Shepherds, is signed by Alix de La Perelle, chestnut of Olizy and former pupil of the academic painter Alexandre Cabanel. This detail highlights the link between the monument and local history, where the aristocracy played a role in its embellishment. The church, classified as a historical monument by decree of 3 May 1913, stands in the southern part of the village, called La Petite Ville or La Ferté, near the departmental road D241. Its high location and proximity to historical communication axes reflect its past importance, both spiritual and social, to the community of Olizy-Primat and its surroundings.
Historical sources mention several local studies, including those of Octave Guelliot and Hubert Collin, which highlight his architectural and heritage interest. The 1913 classification allowed its preservation, while references such as Clochers de France or the Mérimée base of the Ministry of Culture attest to its national recognition. The building, owned by the commune, remains a symbol of the Ardennes religious heritage, mixing medieval heritage and later artistic contributions, as evidenced by the painting by Alix de La Perelle, a local figure linked to 19th century art.
