Origin and history

The church of Saint-Pierre-aux-Liens de Congrier, dedicated to Saint Peter, was rebuilt in Romanesque style at the end of the 19th century. Consecrated on 19 October 1897, it is part of the reconstruction movement of churches of that time. The modern building, designed by Eugène Hawke between 1881 and 1884, replaces an initial church in the shape of a cross with low side, restored after the French Revolution by the inhabitants for 6,120 francs.

The old church housed a long choir adorned with a marble altar made by the marbriers Guichard and Gandon d'Angers (850 francs). It had three ancient statues (saint Peter, the Virgin, Saint Joseph) and two lateral altars of 1820, carved by Pierre Doitté de Laval. A bentier decorated with grimacing figures was embedded near the large door.

The Brotherhood of the Immaculate Conception, founded under the episcopate of Claude de Rueil (Bishop of Angers, 1628-1649), played a role in the beautification of the church, as the redorage of the altar of the Virgin in 1766. The modern church inventory took place on 6 February 1906, and a marble plaque (1886) commemorates André Royné, Georges Dutertre and Alexandre Beaudouin.
