Origin and history

The church of St Peter's Artix is a Catholic religious building located in the centre of the town of Artix, in the department of the Pyrénées-Atlantiques. The present building was built in the late nineteenth century, after the demolition of the former parish church in 1880. Its inauguration took place in 1899, marking the culmination of a project initiated several decades earlier.

Construction of the new church began around 1860–65 under the impetus of the parish priest Aris de Montaut, who died in 1866. His successor, Abbé Laurens, continued the work with the financial support of the family of Lestapis. The building was embellished by figurative glass windows, dated 1867 and made by the Palois master glassmaker Jules-Pierre Mauméjean, who now adorn the choir.

The solemn consecration of the church was presided over by Gaspard Jauffret on 5 December 1899. This monument thus illustrates the religious architecture of the late 19th century in New Aquitaine, mixing local heritage and artistic influences of the period.
