Origin and history
Saint-Pierre d'Ellon Church is a Catholic church in the small town of Ellon, Calvados department, Normandy. Built in the 14th century, it is a typical example of medieval religious architecture in this region. Its tower, a remarkable architectural element, was classified as historical monuments on October 22, 1913, thus highlighting its heritage importance.
In the 14th century, Normandy was a region marked by intense rural and religious life. The churches, like Ellon, served as a spiritual and community centre, welcoming the faithful for local services and gatherings. These buildings also played a social role, hosting events important to the lives of the inhabitants, such as baptisms, weddings and funeral vigils.
The protection of the bell tower in 1913 reflects the recognition of its historical and architectural value. This classification is part of a broader approach to preserving French heritage, initiated at the end of the 19th century. Saint-Pierre Church, although partially protected, remains a symbol of the rich medieval heritage of Lower Normandy, now integrated into the Normandy region.
Available sources, including the Monumental Statistics of the Calvados d'Arcisse de Caumont (1857), provide details of its history and architecture. These documents, combined with the data of the Merimée database, allow to situate the church in its historical and geographical context, while offering avenues for further research on its evolution over the centuries.
