Origin and history

Saint-Pierre d'Engranville Church is a Roman Catholic church in the municipality of Formigny La Bataille, Calvados department. It is located in the territory of the former commune of Engranville, incorporated in Formigny in 1855. The building is dated to the first half of the 13th century by historian Arcisse de Caumont, although a Romanesque door on the south side suggests an earlier origin.

The church was saved from total destruction thanks to the intervention of the French Archaeology Society. It was listed as historical monuments on 2 July 1927. According to Arcisse de Caumont, the building housed murals, including geometric motifs in the nave and characters painted in red and yellow in the choir. A funerary liter was also kept there.

The church is distinguished by its remarkable vaults in the choir and a massive lateral tower, with a pyramid with skylights on each side. Despite its state of ruin, it bears witness to the medieval religious architecture of the region. Arcisse de Caumont's research and descriptions, as well as the work of the Société des Antiquaires de Normandie, have documented its history and architectural characteristics.

Today, the church belongs to an association and remains an important vestige of the historical heritage of Calvados. Its inscription to historical monuments in 1927 helped preserve this testimony of the Norman medieval past.
