Choir, transept, west façade (Box C 715): by order of 13 June 1913

Origin and history

The church Saint-Pierre de Bengy-sur-Craon, located in the Cher department in the Centre-Val de Loire region, finds its origins in the middle of the 12th century. Its initial construction reflects the Romanesque style characteristic of this period, with a choir and a west portal that survived subsequent reshuffles. The building was partially classified as historic monuments by order of 13 June 1913, thereby recognizing its heritage value.

The early construction underwent several changes during the modern era. The original vaults of the nave were replaced by vaults and double arches of plaster, while the exterior foothills were removed. The walls and windows have also been redone or altered, and the two floors of the bell tower, although inspired by old arrangements, are a modern work. Only the choir, dating from the 12th century, and the west gate, from the 13th century, remained intact, bearing witness to the original medieval architecture.

The classification as a historical monument in 1913 specifically concerns the choir, transept and west façade. These protected elements illustrate the importance of preserving the oldest parts of the building, despite the transformations that have taken place over the centuries. The church remains today an example of the architectural and historical evolution of rural churches in France.

The location of the church, at 7 Church Square in Bengy-sur-Craon, is specified in heritage databases such as Merimée. The building belongs to the commune and its state of conservation, assessed as poor in terms of location accuracy, reflects the challenges of preserving the heritage in rural areas. Available sources, such as Wikipedia and Monumentum, provide additional information on its history and architecture.
