Origin and history

The church Saint-Pierre de Bordeaux finds its origins in a Paleo-Christian basilica quoted by Grégoire de Tours, described as a place of harbour worship near the confluence of the Devèze and the Garonne. This site, linked to miracles like the appearance of St Stephen, served as a port church, with a crypt containing relics. The written traces of this period are limited to these records, without precise architectural details.

In the Middle Ages, the siltation of the Devèze turned the district into an urbanised area, centered around the Ducal Castle of Umbria. A papal bubble of Alexander III in 1173 placed the church under the tutelage of the chapter of Saint Andrew. In 1262 the texts attest to the existence of the place and port of Saint Peter. The complete reconstruction of the building, initiated in 1358 by Pope Clement V, extends until the end of the 15th century, marking its present Gothic architecture.

The church underwent a global restructuring in 1882 and a devastating fire in November 1977 destroyed the choir, the high altar and the organ. A restoration campaign then revived the vaults and stained glass windows, notably that of Joseph Villiet (circa 1860) representing a white queen and two black slaves, a symbol of Bordeaux's historical ties to the trade. Ranked a historic monument in 1908, it remains an active place of worship, integrated into the pastoral area of the Port.

Today, Saint Peter's church shares its parish life with four other Bordeaux religious buildings, whose management is entrusted to different communities. Its iconic stained glass window and its history linked to the ancient port make it a major testimony of Bordeaux heritage, between medieval heritage and modern transformations.
