Origin and history
Saint-Pierre de Bréville-les-Monts Church is a former Catholic church in the Calvados department of Normandy. It was listed as historic monuments on May 16, 1927, recognizing its heritage importance. Its architecture blended modern elements (nave and tower) with a choir probably dating from the 15th century, or even from an earlier era, according to the observations of Arcisse de Caumont.
During the Battle of Normandy on June 12, 1944, the building was destroyed after being used as an ammunition depot by German forces. The ruins still bear witness to this tragic episode of the Second World War. A new church was rebuilt in 1960, marking a revival for the local community.
The remains of the old church, including the remains of the medieval choir, have been protected since 1927. These elements provide an overview of the architectural and religious history of the region, although the original building has disappeared. The precise location, near the road of Sallenelles, allows visitors to access the ruins, today owned by the municipality.
