Origin and history
The Saint-Pierre de Foulognes Church is a Catholic religious building in the commune of Foulognes, Calvados, Normandy. Built between the 12th and 13th centuries, it is a typical example of medieval ecclesiastical architecture in this region. Its designation as Historic Monuments, effective since 21 May 1927, underscores its historic importance and remarkable conservation status for this period.
The building houses notable furniture, including a bas-relief and two chalices, also listed as protected objects. These elements illustrate the artistic and liturgical richness of the church, while testifying to local religious practices in the Middle Ages. The location of the church, to the west of Foulognes territory, strengthens its anchor in the historical and cultural landscape of Calvados.
The available sources, notably the references of Arcisse de Caumont in his monumental Statistique du Calvados (1857), as well as the data of the Merimée database, confirm his status as a communal property. Although few specific architectural details are mentioned, its official listing and its presence in heritage inventories make it a place of interest in the study of Norman religious history.
Saint Peter's Church, like most buildings of that time in Normandy, played a central role in community life. It served not only as a place of worship, but also as a gathering point for the inhabitants, reflecting the social and spiritual organization of the medieval villages. Parish churches, such as Foulognes, were often at the heart of daily activities, liturgical celebrations and significant events in local life.
