Origin and history
Saint-Pierre de Grainville-sur-Odon Church is a Catholic building located in the Calvados department in Normandy. Its construction spans several periods: the nave, the oldest part, probably dates back to the late 11th or early 12th century, while the choir seems to date from the 14th century. The north side tower, on the other hand, has sculptural elements characteristic of the late 15th century, illustrating the architectural evolution of the building over centuries. The church adopts a plan of a Latin cross without sideways, with a square bell tower serving as a north transept arm, housing a secondary altar and altar.
Classified as historical monuments since June 20, 1910, Saint-Pierre Church bears witness to the religious and architectural history of the region. Its choir and bell tower are the elements protected by this classification. Inside, the secondary altar, the altarpiece and the 18th and 19th century panelling, located on the ground floor of the tower, have been included in the inventory of objects since 1985. These elements reflect the liturgical transformations, especially after Vatican Council II in 1965, which led to the replacement of traditional altars with altars 'face to the people'.
According to the observations of Arcisse de Caumont in his monumental Statistique du Calvados (1846), the church is representative of Romanesque and Gothic styles, with late additions such as the flamboyant filling windows of the tower. These architectural details, combined with its centuries-old history, make it an emblematic heritage of Grainville-sur-Odon and Calvados. The precise location of the building, at 5013 Rue du Chemin Vert, and its Insee code (14311) confirm its anchoring in the communal territory.
