Origin and history

Saint-Pierre de La Sauve Church, located in the Gironde department in New Aquitaine, is an emblematic religious building of the twelfth, thirteenth and sixteenth centuries. Founded in 1083 by Saint Gérard de Corbie, it was rebuilt at the end of the 12th and at the beginning of the 13th century in a Gothic style, while preserving Romanesque elements such as figurative modillons. Its primitive architecture, marked by a rectangular nave with flat bedside, was enriched in the 16th century by the addition of a northern collateral.

The church's bedside, designed as a decorated facade, is decorated with life-size statues depicting St Peter, the Virgin, St James the Major and St Michael. These sculptures, visible from the nearby Abbey of La Sauve-Majeure, reflect the importance of the building on the roads of Compostela. The western facade, devoid of decoration, contrasts with the rich iconography of the bedside, which served as a "window" for pilgrims and monks.

Inside, the church houses 13th and 16th century murals, restored in the 19th century, as well as remarkable elements such as a sculpted bentier novel (classified Historic Monument in 1903) and the relics of Saint Gérard de Corbie, translated in 1859. The 17th century altar of the Virgin and the organ of Charles Gounod (installed in 2020) complete this exceptional heritage. The building, classified as a Historic Monument in 1920, bears witness to the artistic and religious evolution of the region.

The adjacent cemetery preserves three 15th and 16th century crosses, one of which bears the inscription "LHOST FECIT 1780". These elements, combined with 16th century stained glass windows and historic capitals, underline the church's central role in the community and spiritual life of La Sauve, between medieval heritage and modern adaptations.

The history of the church is also marked by controversial restorations, such as that of 1866, which standardized the murals to the detriment of their original diversity. Despite these interventions, recent discoveries, such as the crucifixion of the sixteenth century restored in 1995, reveal the preserved iconographic richness. Today, Saint-Pierre Church remains a place of worship and heritage, managed by the municipality and open to the visit.

Future

The Saint-Pierre de La Sauve Church is one of 71 monuments and 7 portions of roads have been listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites since 1998 under the official title of "Chemins de Saint-Jacques-de-Compostelle en France".

It was at the edge of one of the 4 classic tracks (Via Turonensis, Via Lemovicensis, Via Podiensis and Via Tolosana). The pilgrims therefore had to make a detour to visit it.
