Origin and history

Saint-Pierre de Mortrée Church is a Catholic religious building in the commune of Mortrée, Orne, Normandy. Built during the second quarter of the 19th century, it is part of an urban complex centered around the village square, newly created at that time. This monument reflects the neo-classical architectural influences, with a basilical plan devoid of transept, typical of the achievements of the school of diocesan architects of this period.

Originally designed by architect Laumonier, the project was taken over and modified in 1831 by Dominique Dedaux. The latter moves the tower of the bell tower behind the choir, redraws the facade, and adds chapels of serbian angles as well as a vault with straight caissons in the nave. The works, carried out between 1831 and 1834, culminated in a building marked by a colonnade bearing an entablement, collaterals with a flat ceiling, and a choir with a walk-in altar inspired by antiquity. The church is representative of the Parisian architectural programs of the years 1820-1830, simplified for a provincial application.

The interior wall decoration was made between 1890 and 1892 and completed in 1895, adding an artistic dimension to the building. The church is listed as historic monuments by order of 16 February 2006, thus recognizing its heritage value. It belongs to the commune of Mortrée and is located in the church square, in the heart of the village.

Architects and artists associated with this monument include Dominique Dedaux, as well as painters Louis Chifflet and Antoine Barillet, who contributed to its decoration. The building bears witness to the architectural and artistic developments of the 19th century, while playing a central role in local religious and community life.
