Origin and history
The church of Saint Peter of Pervillac, mentioned from the 13th century in the archives of the diocese of Agen, finds its origins in a building of the late 15th century. Its architecture reflects this period, especially with a flat bedside adorned with a sharp and threaded dogive cross, typical of late Gothic. The nave, higher and wider than the choir, was profoundly altered in the 19th century, with an extension of the walls to accommodate a vault built in 1892. The gate, with a broken line framed by a prominent boudin, is sheltered by an awning in appentis, while the facade, which was rebuilt in the 19th century, incorporates a flamboyant rose and a triangular bell tower.
Inside, the church preserves remains of early 16th-century murals, made in the wetness on a background of lime milk. These frescoes, located in the choir, on the north and south walls of the nave, represent religious themes such as the Virgin and Saint Peter, the seven capital sins, as well as scenes of hell and purgatory. The monument also underwent subsequent additions, such as a side chapel opened in the eighteenth century, covered with a wooden ceiling, and a sacristy door dated 1700. The bell tower wall, partially rebuilt at the end of the 19th century, completes these transformations.
Ranked among the Historical Monuments by decree of 8 June 1979, the St. Peter's Church of Pervillac illustrates the architectural and artistic evolution of a rural religious building, marked by centuries-long construction and restoration campaigns. Its present state thus combines medieval elements, such as the portal and the choir, with more recent additions, such as the vault of the nave and the exterior decoration of the facade. The location of the building, in the village of Pervillac in Montaigu-de-Quercy, bears witness to the religious and cultural heritage of Occitanie.
