Origin and history

The Saint-Pierre du Plan church is located in Le Plan, a bastide founded in 1366 by the Count of Comminges. This fortified village, typical of Occitan medieval urbanism, originally incorporated the church into its defensive system: its front façade was part of the wall of enclosure. The current structure, including the fortified bell tower, dates mainly from the 16th century, when local conflicts made it necessary for dual-use religious and military buildings.

The fortified facade of the church is distinguished by its reinforced corners, forming square towers in light protruding, each surmounted by a polygonal roof or an arrow. In the centre, four arcades house the bells, while the upper part is crenellated, reminiscent of the ramparts. At the base, two high ogival arcades pierce the facade, serving as the entrance porch. These architectural elements reflect an adaptation to the defensive needs of the time, while maintaining a liturgical function.

The building was partially protected under the Historic Monuments by an order of 17 April 1950, specifically concerning its fortified bell tower. Today owned by the municipality, the church bears witness to the turbulent history of this high-garonnaise bastide, where medieval and Renaissance heritage are mixed. Its location facing the bridge, a strategic point, highlights its central role in community life and village defence.
