Origin and history

The church of Saint-Pierre-ès-Liens in L-Escarene, mentioned in the 11th century, appears in the archives of Saint-Pons Abbey in Nice. A charter of 1037 attests to a gift made to the church by a certain Bonix, under the authority of Raimbald, lord of Nice, and Bishop Nitard. In 1074, Rostaing, son of Raimbald, and his wife Aicelene gave up property to the church, followed in 1075 by a larger donation including the church itself and its outbuildings at St. Pons Abbey. These acts, confirmed in 1081, marked the beginning of his status as parish priory in the thirteenth century.

In the Middle Ages, the priory of L'Escarene acquired seigneurial rights, probably derived from the gift of 1074, and his prior exercised low justice until the death of Queen Jeanne in the 14th century. In the 17th century, the priory was reorganized: in 1687, Pope Innocent XI transferred it to the Conventual Mens of Saint-Pons, and from 1688, a monk professed from the abbey became its prior, while a perpetual vicar resided there. The church, rebuilt between 1627 and 1656 under the direction of the local community, began its work in 1645.

The reconstruction of the church, completed in 1656, mobilized several artisans: the engineer Jean-André Guiberto supervised the works in 1652, the entrepreneur Baptiste Bonanat directed them, and the stucator Jean-Pierre Marvaldi intervened in 1654-1655. The roof was laid in 1655 by Pierre and Antoine Veran. In 1657, the communal council sold three side chapels to finance interior decoration. The organ, installed in 1791 by the Friars Grinda, niçois factors, completes the building, classified historical monument in 1978.
