Origin and history
The church Saint-Pierre-et-Saint-Paul d'Amareins is a rural Romanesque chapel located in the village of Amareins, in the commune of Francheleins, in the department of Ain. Cited in the 11th century, it depended in the 12th century on the Abbey of the Chair-God. Its name has evolved over the centuries, from Ecclesia marengiis (Burgund origin) to Marens, then Amaren, Amarains, before becoming Amarin at the end of the 14th century.
During the French Revolution, Abbé Pourcel, parish priest of Amareins, was dismissed for criticizing the principles of Freedom and Equality in his sermons. The church bells were melted at that time, and the present bell, weighing 170 kg, was named by its godmother, Eléonore Chamarande. The church, restored in 1960, has been listed as historical monuments since October 14, 1969.
The modest building reflects the rural religious architecture of the region. Its history is marked by its connection to the Abbey of the Chair-God and revolutionary upheavals, which have left traces in its material and intangible heritage.
