Origin and history

The church Saint-Pierre-et-Saint-Paul d'Argol, located in the Finistère, was built in 1575 in the heart of a parish enclosure. It was restored in 1617, enlarged in 1674, and its lateral walls were rebuilt in 1784. Its bell tower, dated 1585, has a Gothic arrow, while the bedside was rebuilt in 1641. The porch, however, dates from 1839. The building is dedicated to the apostles Peter and Paul, with Saint Clement as principal patron saint and Saint Geneviève as secondary patron saint since 1634.

The parish enclosure of Argol is remarkable for its triumphal arch of 1659, decorated with canned columns and an equestrian statue of King Gradlon. It also houses a 1593 calvary, an ossuary of 1665, and polychrome statues, including one of Saint Peter's granite of Kersanton. The cemetery, inscribed in 1931, and the triumphal arch, restored in 1906, complete this historic ensemble. The church and its triumphal arch have been classified as historical monuments since 1914.

Inside, there are statues from the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, such as those of Saint Peter and Saint Geneviève, as well as a altarpiece dedicated to the latter. The bells, including a fondue in 1839 under the name of Sainte-Geneviève, and another dating from 1694, recall local religious history. A procession cross of 1905 and a confessional of 1830, adorned with a medallion representing Saint Peter, enrich the movable heritage.

The parish enclosures also include missing elements, such as the chapels of Tremenez and Notre-Dame-de-Rochemadou, now reduced to remains. The monumental statue of King Gradlon, made by Patrig Ar Goarnig, and the sculpture Morvarc.

The visible inscriptions on the calvary and facades, such as those of B. Merour and Breton (1585) or the dates of restoration (1891, 1909), reflect the different phases of construction and maintenance. The Renaissance style of the ossuary of 1665 and the interior frescoes complete this Breton architectural and artistic heritage.
