Origin and history

The church of Saint-Pierre-et-Saint-Paul de Guipavas, located in Brittany, has a porch dating from the 3rd quarter of the 16th century, the only ancient vestige of the building. This porch is characterized by painted granite vaults, supported by four columns, and a key decorated with four angels carrying the instruments of the Passion. The facade, surmounted by a carved gable gable and pine acre, houses niches decorated with statues of the apostles. This porch, classified as a Historical Monument, bears witness to the religious architecture of the Breton Renaissance.

Most of the church was rebuilt in 1848-1850, then again in 1955, after a devastating fire in August 1944. These successive reconstructions have profoundly altered the building's appearance, while preserving its central role in Guipavas' community life. The church, along with its placister and an adjacent calvary, were inscribed in full by decree of 10 December 2018, highlighting their heritage importance.

Architects Frémiot and Michel contributed to the reconstruction of the 19th century, marking the stylistic evolution of the building. The location of the church, rue de Paris in Guipavas, and its belonging to the commune reflect its anchoring in the territory of Finistère. The protected elements, including the porch and the floor of the square, illustrate the desire to preserve this emblematic heritage of Brittany.
