Origin and history

The church Saint-Pierre-et-Saint-Paul de Préval, located in the Sarthe department in Pays de la Loire, presents a composite architecture reflecting several epochs. Its central ship and apse could date back to the mid-12th century, although this attribution remains uncertain. The sources confirm, however, that the left collateral and a chapel were erected between 1533 and 1542, marking a major phase of construction during the Renaissance. The roofing panels, on the other hand, were rebuilt around 1580, thus completing the significant work of the sixteenth century.

The bell tower, a distinctive element of the building, was added much later, between 1876 and 1879, illustrating an architectural intervention of the 19th century. Among the remarkable elements, the small gate of the main façade, dated the 16th century, received official protection by inscription at the Historic Monuments on February 22, 1927. This gate is the only explicitly protected element of the monument, according to available archives.

The church, owned by the municipality of Préval (code Insee 72245), is part of a rural context in which religious buildings played a central role in community life. During the Renaissance, a period of major construction, the region was marked by an agricultural and artisanal economy, with parishes such as Préval serving as social and spiritual hubs. The late addition of the bell tower in the 19th century may reflect a desire to modernize or reaffirm local identity, typical of this era of restoration of religious buildings in France.
