Origin and history

Saint-Pierre-et-Saint-Paul de Prévanches Church is a Roman Catholic religious building located in the village of Prévanches, in Lozère (Occitanie). Built in the 12th century, it is entirely built of granite and presents an architectural plan composed of a nave of three spans, preceded by a bell tower and a threshing choir. Its semicircular apse and apsidioles, one of which was replaced in the 15th century by a square chapel, testify to its architectural evolution over the centuries.

The first written mention of the church dates back to 1119, in a document confirming the possessions of the Abbey of Saint-Gilles-du-Gard. Its portal, adorned with yousures in the middle, and its transept covered with a dome illustrate the stylistic Romanesque characteristics. The bell tower, with four arches, seems to have been added later, perhaps replacing an old bell tower barlong. Ranked a historic monument in 1931, the church houses several objects listed in the Palissy base.

The building, owned by the municipality of Prévanches, is a remarkable example of medieval religious architecture in Gevaudan. Its orientation and plan reflect the liturgical practices of the time, while subsequent modifications, such as the 15th century chapel, reveal adaptations to the cultural or structural needs. The location of the church in the heart of the village highlights its central role in community life since the Middle Ages.
