Origin and history

The church of Saint-Pierre-et-Saint-Romain de Savennières, located in Maine-et-Loire, is one of the oldest churches in the region still preserved in elevation. His nave, dated between 362 and 519 with a strong probability around 427, could be related to the episcopate of Saint Maurille, present in Savennières around 450. Sarcophagi of the High Middle Ages and hagiographic texts, such as La Vie de Saint Maurille (revised between 620 and 905), confirm its ancient origin and its early funeral role.

In the 11th century, the monks of Saint-Serge and Angers acquired the three churches of the village, including Saint-Pierre, then central church. The bedside was rebuilt in the 12th century, and a northern collateral was added at the end of the 15th century to respond to population growth. The church then houses five brotherhoods and four chapelies, reflecting its religious and social importance.

Between the 18th and 19th centuries, the Tullay family financed renovations (sacristy, furniture, bell tower). Ranked a Historic Monument in 1840, the church underwent controversial restorations under the direction of Prosper Mérimée, including the suppression of outer coatings and the repair of the bell tower, repeatedly struck by lightning (1846, 1858, 1969). The work of the twentieth century focuses on roofs and the consolidation of the bell tower, damaged by infiltrations and inappropriate use of cement.

Architecturally, the church combines walls in a fish ridge (bricks and moellons) typical of the High Middle Ages, a Romanesque bedside, and redesigned portals. Its cruciform plan and elements such as the sundial or the 18th-century ballets (wood pegs) illustrate its stylistic evolution. Recent excavations (2023) and archaeological studies confirm its status as an exceptionally preserved Merovingian church.

The furniture, enriched after the demolition of the priory Saint-Romain in 1770, includes historical bells and neo-medieval altars installed in the 19th century. Despite the averted revolutionary deterioration, the building required regular restoration campaigns, demonstrating its fragility and heritage value for nearly 16 centuries.
