Origin and history

Saint-Pierre-Saint-Paul d'Artigue Church is a Catholic religious building located in the village of Artigue, in the Haute-Garonne region of Occitanie. Although its exact construction period is not specified, sources suggest an origin dating back to the tenth century. Its history is linked to the abbey of Lézat, to which it was given according to an act of gift dated from the same time.

In the 17th century, the church was subject to the Order of Malta's perception of tithe, illustrating its anchoring in local religious and economic structures. In 1864, its bell tower was completely rebuilt by the commune, with the approval of the Prefect of Haute-Garonne, marking a significant renovation phase. This bell tower now houses two bells: one dedicated to Saints Peter and Paul (1828), and the other to the Virgin Mary (1858).

The interior of the church is distinguished by a rich Christian iconography. The walls of the nave house paintings depicting the Way of the Cross, the Supper and the Holy Family, while statues such as the Sacred Heart of Jesus or Saint Germaine adorn the choir and apse. The tabernacle, on the other hand, features a representation of Christ pantocrator, emphasizing the spiritual and artistic dimension of the place.
