Origin and history

The Saint-Pothin church of Lyon, located in Edgar Quinet Square in the 6th arrondissement, was built between 1841 and 1843 as part of the urbanization of the Brotteaux district, then attached to the municipality of La Guillotière. This project is part of a plan drawn up by architect Jean-Antoine Morand at the end of the 18th century, to structure this new growing neighbourhood. The establishment of the parish in 1826, under the impetus of local notables, led to the construction of the church, despite delays due to budgetary constraints.

The design of the building was entrusted to Christophe Crépet, architect-voyer of La Guillotière and winner of a competition organized by local publishers. His neoclassical project, inspired by the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, was partially executed between 1841 and 1843 due to an undervalued budget, resulting in savings on materials and the postponement of certain decorations, such as the triangular front of the facade. The church was inaugurated on Christmas Day 1843, but architectural disorders required restorations as early as 1867, led by Tony Desjardins, and then by Claudius Porte in 1874 and 1876-1877.

The architecture of the Saint-Pothin church is distinguished by its Latin cross plan, preceded by a doric-style hexastyle portal. The central nave, vaulted in the middle of a pit and flanked by two collaterals, leads to a transept surmounted by a dome. The ionic colonnades of the nave evoke a Roman basilica, while the choir, finished in cul-de-four, houses large organs. The bell tower and the sacristies are located beyond the choir. Despite initial budgetary constraints, the interior was later enriched, notably by a fresco of the dome made in 1893-1894 by Étienne Couvert, representing the Virgin and the twelve apostles, as well as by stained glass windows by Émile Bégule in 1932.

The church organ, a central element of his musical life, has undergone several transformations. The first organ, built in 1846 by Daublaine-Callinet, was replaced in 1876 by a new instrument of the J. Merklin & Cie manufacture. This organ was enlarged several times, notably in 1945 by the company Ruche & Cie, and then completely rebuilt in 2004 by the company Kern, while reusing old elements. After the Second World War, the organ of Saint-Pothin became a prestigious venue of concerts, welcoming renowned organists such as Marcel Dupré, Maurice Duruflé and Jeanne Demessieux, under the leadership of Adrien Rougier, holder from 1945 to 1970.

The church of Saint-Pothin was fully registered under the title of Historical Monuments by prefectural decree of 2 May 2007. This classification recognizes its heritage value, both for its neoclassical architecture and for its role in the religious and urban history of Lyon. Today, it remains an active place of worship and a testimony to the architectural and social evolution of the Brotteaux district, marked by its forced connection to Lyon in 1852 and its urban development in the nineteenth century.
