Chapelle du Mont-Joly : inscription by decree of 21 June 1927

Origin and history

The former Saint-Quentin church of Saint-Quentin-de-la-Roche, commonly known as the Chapel of Mount Joly, is a Catholic parish church located in Soumont-Saint-Quentin, Normandy. Built in the 13th century, it stands on Mount Joly, in the hamlet of Saint-Quentin. This historic monument bears witness to the medieval religious architecture of the region.

Originally, this church was the centre of the parish of Saint-Quentin-de-la-Roche, a missing commune. In 1833, the latter was absorbed by Tassilly, forming Saint-Quentin-Tassilly, before being integrated into Soumont in 1854, giving birth to Soumont-Saint-Quentin. The chapel, disused as a parish church, retains its religious status and heritage importance.

The building was listed as historic monuments on June 21, 1927, recognizing its architectural and historical value. Today, it remains a symbol of Normandy's medieval and religious past, attracting visitors for its picturesque location on Mount Joly and its history linked to 19th-century territorial reorganizations.
