Origin and history
Saint Quentin Church is a Catholic church located in the village of Soumont-Saint-Quentin, Calvados department, Normandy. Built between the twelfth and fourteenth centuries, it reflects the architectural evolutions of this period, with Romanesque and Gothic elements. The building has been classified as historic monuments since June 30, 1910, recognizing its heritage value and importance in local history.
The north elevation of the nave dates from the second half of the 12th century, while the choir was erected in the 13th century. The south elevation of the nave and the west gate were added in the 14th century, illustrating successive modifications to the building. After restorations after 1944, the church preserves traces of its medieval past, especially in its structure and bays, some of which were modified in the 19th century.
The church was initially under the patronage of the Abbey of Villers-Canivet, given around 1160 by Robert Panthou. This link with the abbey bears witness to the religious and social importance of the monument in the region. Today, the church belongs to the commune and remains a symbol of the architectural and historical heritage of Soumont-Saint-Quentin.
Available sources, such as the Monumental Statistics of the Calvados d'Arcisse de Caumont (1850), provide additional details on its history and architecture. These documents, combined with data from Monumentum and the Merimée database, provide a better understanding of the different phases of construction and restorations that have marked the building over the centuries.
