Origin and history

The church of Saint-Rémi d'Orrouy, located in the Oise department in the Hauts-de-France region, is a parish Catholic building dating back to the 12th century. His Romanesque bell tower, dated from the 1130s, was inspired by the one of Morienval, while the basilical nave, not vaulted, has large arcades in third points. The flamboyant Gothic choir-hall, completed around 1540, is characterized by a sober but neat architecture, with dogid vaults and decorated foothills. The church has been listed as a historic monument since 1920 and has been home to five Renaissance glass windows from the 1540s, classified since 1908, depicting biblical and hagiographic scenes.

The history of Orrouy, considered one of the early parishes of Valois, is linked to the Abbey of Saint-Crépin-le-Grand de Soissons from the 9th century. After conflicts with the Counts of Crepy in the 10th century, the church was returned to the abbey in 995. The snack of the cure then passes to the priory of Saint-Thibaut near Bazoches-sur-Vesle. Undocumented church building campaigns are determined by stylistic analysis: the bell tower and nave date from the 12th century, while the choir hall and stained glass windows are from the 16th century. The building, in good condition, remains a major architectural testimony of the region.

The interior of the church reveals a sober nave, with cylindrical pillars and a flat ceiling of the eighteenth century, contrasting with the more elaborate choir-hall, where the dogive vaults and Renaissance windows attract attention. The stained glass windows, restored in the 20th century, illustrate scenes of the Passion of Christ, representations of saints and local donors. Outside, the Romanesque bell tower, with its geminied bays and capital columnettes, dominates the building, while the foothills and gables decorated with the choir hall reflect flamboyant Gothic art. The church, still active, is affiliated with the parish of the autumn valley.

The church furniture includes flamboyant baptismal fonts, wooden and polychrome stone statues, as well as benitiers in Art Nouveau faience. Among the classified works, the Renaissance stained glass windows, the baptismal fonts and four statues (including one of St John and one of St Catherine) stand out. The glass windows, made around 1540-1542, are attributed to local donors such as Mathieu du Verdellot and Nicolle de Vienne. The church, classified as a historical monument, remains a place of worship and a remarkable architectural heritage of the Oise.
