Origin and history
Saint-Remi de Fontenay-le-Vicomte Church is a Catholic parish church located in the Essonne department in Île-de-France. Dedicated to Saint Rémi, it is an emblematic place of worship of the commune, marked by remarkable architecture and historical objects.
The construction of the church began in the 12th century, although the building underwent later modifications. This religious monument thus reflects centuries of local history, with architectural and artistic elements added or transformed over time.
The church has been listed as historic monuments since 17 February 1950, thanks to an official decree. This protection highlights its heritage importance, notably through its three-storey bell tower, its roof in a building, and objects classified as a 16th century bell, a 14th century funerary slab, a 15th century sculptural group (Vierge à l'Enfant and an angel), as well as a 14th century gissant.
These elements, both architectural and furniture, testify to the historical and religious richness of Fontenay-le-Vicomte. The church remains today a symbol of the community and spiritual life of the region, while attracting heritage lovers.
