Origin and history

The church Saint-Rémy de Troyes, located in the Aube department in the Grand Est region (former Champagne-Ardenne), is one of the oldest churches in the city, with origins dating back to at least the eleventh century. Built on the ruins of a Gallo-Roman building destroyed between the 2nd and 3rd centuries, it was originally located in the western suburb of Troyes before being integrated into the urban enclosure in the 13th century. Archaeological excavations of the 1980s confirmed its seniority, as well as the presence of medieval tombs.

In the Middle Ages, Saint-Rémy was a parish-cardinal, i.e. a mother church supervising two branches: Sainte-Madeleine and Saint-Frobert. His priest, from the canons of the cathedral, had a protocol role with the bishop, such as the consecration of holy oils. The tower of the bell tower, erected in 1386, is a rare example of 14th century architecture preserved in Champagne. Its inscription in ancient verse attests to its construction by the margilliers of the time.

The French Revolution marked a dramatic turning point for the building: in 1793 its furniture and bells were sold or melted, while the stained glass windows were destroyed. Saved in extremis from demolition in 1798, the church was restored in the 19th century thanks to local subscriptions and state financing. Between 1884 and 1904, a major restoration restored to Saint-Rémy its brilliance, including the laying of neo-Gothic stained glass windows and the relocation of pictorial works, such as those of Jacques de Létin (known as Ninet), a child of the parish.

The church now houses a rich artistic collection: painted panels from the 16th and 17th centuries (including scenes from the Passion and life of Saint Rémi), stained glass windows from the Vincent Larcher, Champigneulle and Didron workshops, and sculptures such as Christ in bronze cross by François Girardon (1690). Ranked a historic monument in 1908, it remains an active place of worship, welcoming Masses in Latin according to the traditional Roman rite.

Architecturally, Saint-Rémy combines Gothic elements (nef of the 14th century, arches with warheads) and Renaissance additions (choir, radiant chapels). Its 19th-century façade preserves a 15th-century carved portal decorated with a dog-headed snail, a mysterious symbol. The tower of the tower, 61 meters high, still dominates the Troyan landscape, while the interior, from plane to Latin cross, reveals imposing dimensions (42 meters long, 13 meters under vault).
