Origin and history

The church of Saint-Romain de Mazérac is a Catholic church located in the commune of Castets and Castillon, Gironde, New Aquitaine. Built in the 12th century, it is distinguished by its settlement in the distance from Mazérac, east of the village, on the road of Castillon-de-Castets. Its architecture reflects the Romanesque characteristics of the region, with a notable influence in the spatial organization of the religious buildings of the time.

The building was partially protected as historical monuments by an order of 10 December 1925, specifically for its flat bedside. The latter, accompanied by two lateral absidial chapels, forms a structure evoking a transept, a rare architectural element for rural churches of this period. The protection concerns only this part of the building, emphasizing its heritage importance.

The church is now owned by Castets-en-Dorthe (formerly Castets and Castillon). Although its state of conservation and access conditions are not detailed in the sources, its listing in the heritage reflects its historical and architectural value. The data available are mainly from the Merimée and Wikipedia databases, supplemented by local observations such as those of Henry Salome under Creative Commons license.

In the 12th century, rural churches like Saint-Romain played a central role in community life, serving as both a place of worship, a gathering and a territorial marker. Their construction often reflected local resources and know-how, while integrating broader stylistic elements, such as Romanesque art. In Aquitaine, this period was marked by relative political stability under the influence of the Dukes of Aquitaine, promoting the development of religious buildings.
